This is actually a very famous traditional thumri immortalised by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and subsequently sung by many others. It was popularised by the Yesudas version that appeared in the 1977 film Swami which was based on Saratchandra’s novel. Thumris have been used in Hindi films from the 1940s till date and since films have a mass appeal, they help the music reach a much wider audience. 

The inspiration for my paintings comes from many places. sometimes just my playlist is enough. As you can guess by now, I have a thumri playlist playing these days and I have been putting visuals to the words and music playing in my head.
