For me inspiration for a painting can come from anywhere or anything. Sometimes just my playlist is enough inspiration :)

ऐसो गए परदेस पिया तुम

चैन हमें नहीं आए...

तू जो नहीं तो ऐसे पिया हम

जैसे सूना आंगना

नैन तिहारी राह निहारे

नैनन को तरसाओ ना..,,

“Aiso gaye pardes piya tum

Chain hame nahi aaye

Tu jo nahin to aise piya hum

Jaise soona aangna

Nain tihari raah nihare

Nainan ko tarsao na”

- Khamaj by Fuzon

Although this song was popularised by this modern rendition by Fuzon, it is drawn from a traditional thumri in raag Khamaj composed and sung by Ustad Amanat Ali and Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. For those of you who are aficianados of Hindustani classical music, there is an old clip of the original traditional thumri on YouTube.

Thumri is the lesser light of hindustani classical music along with kajri, dadra, hori, tappa, chaiti and the like which are all regarded as light classical or semi-classical by the purists entrenched in the traditional khayal gayki. A khayal uses the lyrics merely as a vehicle to establish the mood and moves of the raag and then breaks free to explore the depths of a raga while the thumri remains anchored to the words and even deviates from the raga from time to time to evoke the emotion behind the words. Thumri is more earthy and romantic in mood. And traditionally sung as a dance accompaniment.  The narrative is always from the female perspective and was originally sung only by females until Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan with his peerless singing of thumris epitomising romance broke the mould and other male singers also started singing it.

Listen to your favourite thumri while looking at the painting :))
